How Much Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost in Southern California? (2025 Guide)

This is usually the first question people ask us. And honestly, it's the right one to start with.

The answer is going to depend on what you're actually trying to do. We work with homeowners across Orange County, Riverside County, and San Bernardino County, and we see projects at every budget level. Here's a real breakdown of what things cost in 2025, so you know what to expect before you ever call a contractor.

The Cosmetic Refresh: $8,000 to $20,000

This is for homeowners who like their kitchen layout but want it to look like a different decade. You're keeping the existing cabinets and plumbing where they are, but updating everything you can see. Think cabinet painting or refacing, new countertops, a tile backsplash, updated lighting, new hardware, and new flooring.

If your kitchen is functionally fine but looks like 1994, this is often the smartest move. Most cosmetic refreshes take two to four weeks and the difference is dramatic.

The Full Remodel: $20,000 to $55,000

This is the most common project we do. Everything gets replaced, but the footprint of the kitchen stays the same. New cabinets, new countertops, updated plumbing and electrical, new flooring, lighting, backsplash, the works.

In the Southern California market, a well-done mid-range kitchen remodel typically adds more value to your home than it costs. Buyers notice kitchens more than almost anything else when they walk through a house.

Cabinet selection is usually the biggest cost driver here. Semi-custom cabinets are significantly less than full custom, and for most homeowners they look just as good.

The High-End or Layout-Change Remodel: $55,000 and Up

Once you start moving walls, relocating plumbing, or adding an island where one didn't exist, you're in a different tier. This level of project involves structural work, plumbing relocation, electrical upgrades, and often custom cabinetry built to spec. These projects take longer, cost more, and require a contractor who can manage every trade start to finish without you having to babysit it.

Done right, a high-end kitchen remodel in SoCal can add significant value. Done wrong, or with the wrong contractor, it becomes a very expensive lesson.

What Pushes the Cost Up

  • Custom cabinetry vs. semi-custom or stock. This alone can be a $15,000 to $30,000 difference.

  • Moving the sink or range. That means rerouting plumbing and electrical, which adds real cost.

  • Premium countertop materials. Quartz and granite are mid-range. Marble and quartzite will push your budget up fast.

  • Appliances. Budget these separately. A decent package runs $3,000 to $8,000. High-end can easily hit $20,000.

  • Labor rates. Southern California labor costs more than the national average. Every honest contractor's bid will reflect that.

A Word on Getting Estimates

Get at least two or three bids before committing to anyone. Not because you should go with the cheapest, because you shouldn't. But comparing bids forces every contractor to walk through the same scope with you, and it helps you see what's actually being included and what isn't. A quote that comes in $10,000 lower might be missing permits, demo and haul away, or is using lower-grade materials.

Ask each contractor exactly what is and isn't in their price. What cabinet brand are they pricing? Are permits included? Who pulls them? A good contractor answers all of this without hesitation.
